Attorney Matthew L. Sharp was recently published in the Reno Gazette Journal, examining Nevada’s new wildfire insurance law and its potential implications for homeowners as significant wildfires burn across Northern Nevada. Sharp discusses Assembly Bill 376 (AB 376), which took effect Jan. 1 and allows insurers, with regulatory approval, to offer homeowners policies that exclude wildfire coverage. The law does not require insurers to offer wildfire coverage separately or limit what they can charge for it.

With the recent Bug, Stallion, and Hawk fires threatening communities across the region, Sharp raises concerns about how these exclusions could affect homeowners, particularly those living in areas where residential development meets wildfire-prone vegetation.

Sharp also emphasizes the importance of reviewing insurance policies before disaster strikes. He encourages homeowners to understand their coverage limits, confirm that their dwelling coverage reflects current rebuilding costs and determine whether their policies provide adequate protection for smoke damage, temporary housing and other fire-related losses.

Drawing on his more than 30 years of experience representing policyholders in insurance disputes, Sharp calls for greater transparency and legislative action to protect Nevada homeowners from potentially devastating coverage gaps.
